Videocity ist ein internationales Public Art Projekt der Kuratorin Dr. Andrea Domesle. Es ist 2013 in Basel entstanden mit dem Ziel, Videokunst aus dem fachspezifischen Kontext von Galerien oder Festivals herauszulösen und einem breiten Publikum im Alltag und seit der Corona-Krise auch Online zugänglich zu machen. Unter dem Titel Food hat Dr. Andrea Domesle zusammen mit ihrem Team seit Jahresbeginn ein Reihe von Video-Arbeiten zusammengestellt, welche thematisch ums Essen kreisen.

Gerade in der Coronakrise, in der wir uns unversehens auf die eigenen vier Wände zurückgeworfen finden, hat das Thema eine neue Aktualität erhalten: Haben Sie Ihren Umgang mit dem Grundbedürfnis Nahrung geändert? Wurden Sie mit Hamsterkäufen, einem teilweise eingeschränkten oder rationierten Warenangebot konfrontiert? Oder fühlten Sie sich isoliert bei Ihren Mahlzeiten in der Quarantäne? Mit der Erfahrung der Krise änderte sich für viele die Einstellung zum Essen.
Eine Auswahl von vier Videoarbeiten aus der Reihe Food ist vom 5. Dezember 2020 bis zum 29. Januar 2021 am Wolkenhof und im Internet zu sehen.
Die Videos im Kunstfenster laufen jeweils von 9:00 bis 23:00 Uhr.

Anette Halm "Libido"

Libido ist ein Selbstportrait der Künstlerin beim Verzehr eines Brathähnchens. Der Akt des Essens wird dabei so nah herangezoomt, dass die menschlichen und tierischen Körperteile verschmelzen.

In the video “Libido”, the portrait of the artist eating a chicken can be seen. The act of eating is brought so close to the viewer that sometimes only the red-lipped mouth and a chicken drumstick can be seen, animal and human body parts merging in the act of devouring.

Peter Aerschmann "Sputnik"

Sputnik 1 war der erste künstliche Satellit, der am 4.10.1957 in die Erdumlaufbahn geschossen wurde.
In seinen Animationen lässt Peter Aerschmann isolierte Figuren und Objekte um ihre eigene Achse oder die Achse anderer Objekte kreisen. Hieraus hat er einen ganz persönlichen Stil entwickelt.

Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to be sent into orbit around the earth on 4.10.1957.
In his animations, the artist usually allows figures and objects to rotate around their own axes or around the axes of other objects, thus characterizing his own very individual style.

Franziska Bieri „Einhämmern“

Wie viele ihrer Arbeiten bezieht sich Einhämmern auf den Herkunftsort der Künstlerin, einem katholisch ländlichem Dorf in der Zentralschweiz. Die Künstlerin tritt als Perfomerin auf. In einer Bauernstube schneidet sie eine Scheibe Brot ab, die sie mit Butter bestreicht. Dann holt sie einen Hammer und beginnt das Butterbrot mit sieben Zimmermannsnägeln auf die Tischplatte zu nageln. Als sie fertig ist, geht sie aus dem Bild. Vom unsichtbaren Ende der Tischplatte her bläst sie Staub über das Brot. Lag dieser Staub hier schon seit Jahren? Ist der Raum überhaupt noch bewohnt?

Like many of the artist’s works, the video “Einhämmern / Hammering in” is related to her place of origin, in a rural Catholic village in Central Switzerland. Franziska Bieri appears as a performer. In an austere farmhouse parlour, she cuts off a slice of bread and spreads it with butter - without using a plate, directly onto the wooden table. She then nails the slice to the table with seven large nails and strong blows. The last scene shows the artist blowing dust up from the tabletop and then stepping out of the picture. Dust or dirt has probably been collecting for years. Is the parlour still inhabited? Or has the artist returned especially for this gesture?

Gyonyoung Yoon „Filling in the Physical Reality, Living in Digital Reality“

Die Arbeit Filling in Physical Reality, Living in Digital Reality der südkoreanischen Künstlerin umfasst eigentlich drei Kapitel, welche Momente von Heimweh untersuchen: in den Ferien, beim Ausruhen und – hier gezeigt - beim Essen: Die in kaltem Weiss gehaltene Anfangsszene kontrastiert mit üppigen, idyllischen Animationen. Dann realisiert man, dass es sich nur um eine virtuelle Umgebung handelt, welche das Wunschdenken der Künstlerin visualisiert, das diese auf einem Bildschirm herunterlädt. Die Künstlerin zeigt Sehnsüchte nach bestimmten Orten, Strukturen und auch Geschmäckern, die wir alle kennen. Die digitalen Medien haben uns ein Werkzeug gegeben die weissen Leerstellen in uns zu füllen – wenn auch oft nur auf palliative ephemere Weise.

"Filling in physical reality, living in digital reality" (2020) is a video in three chapters by the South Korean-born artist Gyonyoung Yoon, which explores three moments of homesickness: on holiday, whilst eating and whilst resting. The plain, white, initial scenes are contrasted with idyllic, luxurious animated scenarios that appear in the form of a constellation of wishes and memories. Yet, we soon realise that these are ‘just’ virtual environments visualising some wishful thinking, as we witness how the scenarios load and play for the artist’s amusement, not without some glitches. The artist visually expresses her longing for people, places and even specific tastes and textures in direct and appealing terms, thus allowing the viewers to identify themselves in her experience. Digital means have now given us tools –even if often palliative and ephemeral– to fill in many blanks.

Videocity is an international public art project initiated by the curator Dr. Andrea Domesle. It was started in 2013 in Basel with the intention to make video art work accessible to a large public beyond the institutional framing of galleries and festivals. Screenings are taking place in everyday life situations and due to the corona crisis recently also online.

Videocity Food was started in the beginning of 2020 and joins a selection of videos dealing with the topic of food and eating culture.

Being thrown back to the intimate framing of our homes the topic of food was obtaining a new and unexpected importance: has your relationship with your basic need of nutrition been modified by the lock down? Have you been confronted with panic buying, with limited offers or food rationing.
Did you feel lonely while having your meals alone in quarantine? With the experience of the crisis the importance of food changed for a lot of people.

A selection of four videos out of the series Videocity Food can be watched at the Wolkenhof and online from December 12th December 2020 to January 29th 2021.
